Residency: Takt Kunstproktraum
Berlin, Germany
2008
The following artwork was completed during a two-month stay at the Takt Kunstproktraum Artist Residency in East Berlin, Germany, 2008. www.taktberlin.org
Early in my art career, I spent a summer in Berlin, Germany. I was in Friedrichshain, a neighborhood in East Berlin. There was a feeling of re-birth through the furious energy of art-making that dominated the air and re-captured the abandoned city landscape. Much of this area was marked by communist architecture that had been left vacant. The power of the city and the people was indescribable.

In Berlin, one of my artistic goals was to explore the formal and experiential nature of handwriting, as well as storytelling. Through my efforts, a series of very personal “sculptural stories” emerged that came directly from my own personal memories.
